The U.S. Senate has removed Syria from its list of “rogue” countries, which the list includes nations such as Iran, Russia, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela. These countries have been accused by the US! of acting against U.S. interests, and other alleged human rights violations.
Syria has been designated as a state sponsor of terrorism since 1979, a label that has led to significant sanctions. These sanctions include a ban on military exports, restrictions on foreign aid, and control over financial transactions.
This recent action appears to be a step towards normalizing relations between Washington and the new Syrian government. Additionally, the U.S. previously lifted sanctions on Syria for six months.
Washington aims to strengthen its political relationship with the al-Julani government and elevate it to the highest level possible, especially in light of the reduced number of U.S. troops in Syria.
