GHAYBAH. The Arabic word ghaybah literally means absence, but in the theological constructs of the Twelvers (Ithna `Asharlyah, a Shi`i sect) it designates the "occultation" of the twelfth imam, Muhammad, son of al-Hasan ibn `Ali al-`Askari (d. 874).
